game / computer woes
Hello, and I apologize for the lack of updates this week. I have been studying for the last test of the Fundamentals module (it covered some infections, some nervous system drugs, some parasites, and other random material). Also, I haven’t had a functional computer for the past few days (I’ll spare you the details, but just know that the mouse problem I wrote about before was a sign of things to come — motherboard meltdown is my current D(x) — that means diagnosis). So, between the computer troubles and a STRONG presence at the library, I haven’t had time to blog.
Regarding the game, as I previously mentioned, we played one of the other teams from our class (the team that beat us 19-0 in the first game of the season). We have improved a lot over the course of the year, and I was hopeful that we could show up and surprise them. Honestly, we did. We drove the field and scored first, going up 7-0. They drove right back, but missed the 1-point try at the end, so we’re up 7-6. This is very good, considering that we didn’t score at all in the first game and had no defensive answer for their offense.
Then, our offense stalled. I didn’t get the ball at all, it was very difficult for the quarterback to even get a pass off (when they were thrown, they were lobbed in the air and easily knocked-down or intercepted). Final score was 13-7, a very respectable number. I was pleased with our improvement, and I believe that a quicker squad to go with our mid-season philosophy change would have gotten us deep into the playoffs. As is, we had to settle for 1 playoff win and a 4-3 final record.
I’m shopping around for computers, let me know if you have any suggestions. I’m pretty sure I’ll be getting another desktop, but laptops do have their advantages…however, I don’t have a desire to carry around a laptop bag, and don’t think I would really move it around very much. Therefore I have a few options:
1. buy a new, preconfigured system from Dell or Vision Computers. This is the easiest option, but could leave me with stuff I don’t need or necessarily want. Less flexibility with components.
2. Configure a system from Vision. Probably a good middle-of-the-road solution, could be a little more expensive if I put “premium” components in it. I would get to omit things I don’t need, which would mitigate that cost somewhat.
3. Buy a “barebones” system (case, power supply, motherboard, ram) from either Delta computers or online at Newegg.com and install the rest of the components plus the operating system myself. Advantages: much more computer for the money, knowledge that I only installed software that I wanted. Disadvantages: a little more effort.
4. Buy individual components from Newegg.com and put the whole thing together myself. There isn’t a really significant difference between #3 and #4, just my comfort level. I’ve never actually installed a motherboard before (but I’ve done almost everything else with a PC).
If I get a pre-built or built-to-order system, I have to wait for construction or wait for them to ship it to me. I can actually get components in my hands and start building with option #4, requiring a shorter shipping time (but more effort on my part). I’d really like to have a computer this week for the Women’s Health ECM Intersession (lots of printing, probably) but I’m not sure how feasible that will be with any of the options.
Now taking suggestions and comments.
I’m back in the ATL this weekend, always the best part of my week…
