organization

November 9, 2005

settle down everyone, i know you want to hear about this.
Katie assisted me this weekend in cleaning and organizing my apartment (I mean that she cleaned, and i like a jerk threw the orange nylon flying disc with scott in the hall until i felt guilty that i wasn’t helping, bringing a close to the game and allowing me to move some crap upstairs).
That kinda got me started on an organization kick, leading me to download Konfabulator with some widgets including JC Sticky Deluxe (a sticky note program), TenPlusTwo (explained below), and CPU Mark (trying to figure out why my computer randomly stutters). I also tried something I read online on 43folders.com called (10+2)*5. The basic premise: if you’re a procrastinator, and you’ve got a task you have to accomplish, you spend 10 minutes working followed by a strict 2 minute break. Repeat 5x and booyah, you’ve killed an hour. The TenPlusTwo application is a timer which simply counts down from 10, makes a noise, and then instantly counts down from 2 minutes. it repeats forever and ever. It is adjustable if you have a slightly longer attention span (I do). So between the sticky note program and the timer program, I feel like I got a lot of “mental organization” done this week. It all led to me getting started on my Pathology presentation for next wednesday. I’ve got a slide of objectives and everything.

This 43folders site is brilliant. Very funny, with practical things you can do (like reading and thinking about organizing and stopping your procrastination….instead of actually doing work). They have a brief podcast (not going to bother explaining that concept), and the most recent one is “How to leave a voice mail message”.
Of course I like that site, it speaks to me.
Further down is a brilliant post that talks about annoying email habits, in the style of the guy’s other website http://www.5ives.com. That site has some funny stuff, also.

Random (but not so random once I tell you all about it in a few days) link of the day: http://www.dromedarymusic.com/instruments-main.html

  1. you forgot notable quotes from the organization hell that I was around to experience: “This is meant for fun, throw it away!”, “I am the organizing devil!”, and “Throw everything away that does not resemble a purse or shoes!”
