this is turning into a link-blog

but I don’t mind that too much.
Regular updates are better than nothing, right?
I’ll share this gem with you and then update you on Augusta.
http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/fishing/news/story?page=f_fea_bass_world-record_Weakley_25.1
Read it for the story on the unofficial 25.1 lb fish. Read it for the controversy about the certification and whether this guy should get the record. Read it simply because I told you to.
But most of all, read it for this quote:

It’s the same fish I caught three years ago,” said Dickerson, 33, a casino-industry employee from Oceanside, Calif. “I knew this was a world record before we even weighed it. It’s the biggest, most ferocious bass in that lake, guaranteed.

Prefacing that is the best sentence I’ve read this month (and I’ve been doing a lot of reading):

He knows this because she has the same distinguishing black dot under her right gill plate.

I love it.

Augusta decided to turn cold, and of course KJ, court, ashley, and andrea are all down in Miami partying and sitting on the beach for Chutney’s spring break. It was 55 degrees and cloudy yesterday, it rained last night, and was wet and even colder (40s) today.
It’s not like I have anything to do but sit inside and study….
oh wait, we have 2 softball games one the schedule this week and I have a PBL group on Wednesday afternoon.
The first of those two was last night. My stats: 1/2 with a walk and 2 runs scored. I’m currently 2/3 on the season with 2 runs scored, one RBI, one BB, and one error (although that could be 0 or 3 depending on the scorekeeper). Not too shabby. Our team is 1-1, having both lost and won a game by the slaughter rule, try and figure that one out. Wednesday’s game is against the other second year med school team, it’ll be a nailbiter.
time to go study, i can’t do much tomorrow…

bourbon-barrel beer

March 18, 2006

http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/news/14101402.htm

From the Lexington, KY paper - an article covering brewers that put their beer in bourbon barrels. Sounds delicious to me. Some companies including the Lexington Brewing Company are making “bourbon-barrel ale” and others like Chicago’s Goose Island Brewery are making heavy chocolate-bourbon stouts. I’d love to try one of those, I’ll be on the lookout.

The premise is simple: find out artist and title of songs that appeared in popular recent TV shows and movies. This will hopefully answer questions like the one I had about a Sopranos episode from the end of season 5 (the song that was repeated, especially when Tony Blundetto is driving up to the farm in his big awesome car - Van Morrison “Glad Tidings”). The Sopranos is not an episode they track, but if you hear a song on CSI(vegas, miami, NY) or The O.C. then you can look it up.
Tourney update: currently 5/7, with all but one of my Sweet 16 teams still alive (and all my elite 8 teams). A lot better than I’ve done in the past…

More misc. comments

1. Black.White. is not worth an hour per week…it’s a show based around racial discussion/argument, and it’s not “eye-opening” to me at all. It has some make-you-cringe moments but that is not a feature of a TV show I enjoy…
2. I saw an ad on Uncrate for a luxury trailer (that’s not what they call it) http://www.uncrate.com/men/home/interior-exterior/marmol-radziner-model-5-home-003515.php
They’ve outfitted it with Sub-Zero kitchen appliances, but it’s still a “manufactured home” that costs about as much as a 4 bedroom in the middle of Dunwoody Club Forest…and where are you gonna put it, the local trailer park?
3. I ended up joining two pools, not too bad. I entered the exact same bracket in each, so I’ll either live or die by: BC, Duke, Gonzaga, and UConn. I picked some upsets but nothing too dramatic (watch out for Northern Illinois, they’re my one “random team to win a few games”)
4. I’m going to the Augusta Lynx game Saturday night, we’re supposedly getting a group together from class. Also, Sunday morning I’m gonna go help out with the construction of a bike trail outside North Augusta, SC (they’re scheduled to open next weekend and I’ll feel good about riding it in the future if I help out now). In the more immediate future, I have no St. Patrick’s Day plans, we’ll see if something comes up.
5. I’m getting pumped for Doctor Prom next weekend. Hopefully it’ll be as fun as last year, our class is in charge of planning it so it’s got a chance. There’s talk of a Luau-themed party the night before (friday night) but there’s a risk of mandatory leis and seeing weird classmates in coconut bras…not fun times.

Potpourri

March 13, 2006

My right big toe hurts really bad, right at the metatarsal-phalangeal joint. I either have gout, early-onset focal osteoarthritis, or idiopathic toe pain. If it’s gout, the pounds of meat I ate this weekend might have something to do with it…high-DNA content foods, purine salvage and breakdown pathways, etc.
I went mountain bike riding today, that might be influencing it also. (although it was hurting really badly when I was driving back to Augusta this morning). Speaking of this morning, don’t ever try to put the lid “firmly” on a cup of coffee: you’ll end up spilling it all over your hand, pants, and upholstery. It wasn’t scalding hot but it wasn’t comfortable either…
I downloaded and watched Grey’s Anatomy from last night. It was pretty good. nothing really to report (plus I’m not convinced everybody has seen it so I don’t want to spoil).
Speaking of spoilers, SOPRANOS season 6 premiered last night.
Lots of interesting twists, apparently ~18 months has passed since the end of season 5.
I’ll let you download it for yourself (or subscribe to HBO and catch a rerun) if you didn’t see it, I don’t want to ruin it.
If you watch next week, they’re likely to recap some of it, try to catch it.

hello pint glasses
awesome “Hello, my name is” pint glasses that you can write on with grease pencils. the price is a little steep but I love pint glasses. I’m not gonna order them, but those of you that are trying to outfit an apartment should consider something like that if you’re gonna go with a theme…
It’s march madness time, I doubt I’ll throw too much money down on paid bracket leagues (maybe just a $5 one), I’ve gotta win sometime…
Hawks game/Deal or No Deal->24->The Gauntlet tonight, exciting stuff…I’m probably the only person that keeps up with those “Challenges” but they’re good to fall asleep watching. I might DVD-record apprentice and watch it tomorrow, our physical diagnosis group has been moved to Thursday afternoon. Tomorrow evening we’ve got softball practice, and our first game is on Wednesday. The team is probably gonna be a little more competitive: only 2 teams from our class (compared to 3 last year) so I’ve gotta perform better to keep my starting spot in right field (picking dandelions until the left-handed batter comes up)
