OK here it comes, the moment you’ve all been waiting for: Dodgeball stats and wrapup.
I can’t do a better job than Cameron on a play-by-play description of our action, so I’ll give you analysis of my performance (email me and i’ll forward you his play-by-play recap):
I’ve decided that I’m going to go out every game. I play an aggressive style that draws throws. I’m not taunting, but I don’t project a “don’t throw at me cause you’ll just be wasting a dodgeball” vibe. Instead, I see myself as the guy who’s in charge of the “hack-a-Shaq” defense. He’s out there to get fouls and sit right back down. But, he’s creating offensive opportunities for his team (after I draw throws, Cam can snipe the throwers).
Another thing I can do: retrieve balls from the sidelines. I’m the champion at the “tennis ball-boy run” and I’d like to think I’m helping the team out with that.
Don’t get me wrong, my kill ratio isn’t 0, but it’s not anywhere close to 1 (the pre-season “good player” cutoff). the mendoza line of dodgeball should be around 0.50, I think…you get 5 people out either through throws or catches and you got out 10 times. Other vital statistics: retention ratio (games you survived/total games played, mine would be 0/7) and the “last out” (kinda like a shutout by a pitcher, it’s the special situation where you are the last surviving member of the team whether you eventually win or lose, I obviously don’t have any of those).
In addition to statistical analysis, there needs to be more discussion of practice strategies (including full speed throwing-at-a-cone drills and defensive two-line blocking drills) and in-game strategies (the toss-back hasn’t worked very well yet but I still have faith).
We need a more strict conditioning program, which I have instituted personally by jogging every day this week (yes it’s tuesday). I challenge my team members to do the same: at least 15 minutes of jogging a day (>20 if you don’t have to run up hills like I do) — you can spare it before you go to work.
Alright that’s about it for me today. Stay tuned this week, I’ll try to have more for you on Thursday.
