time flies when you’re having fun

June 22, 2006

or in my case, when you’re doing some last minute concept review for USMLE Step 1 (in case I never said the whole name of the test I’m taking tomorrow).
I’m gonna go watch some soccer at the Pointe in a little while, to try and relax a little (but still do some concept reviews at halftime). I am looking forward to tomorrow afternoon like you wouldn’t believe.
And then, i’m going with katie’s family to St. George on Sunday for a whole week — i’m gonna buy Ken and Mr. Jordan some raw oysters and we’re gonna sit and eat them with lots of tabasco so we don’t get all sorts of Vibrio infections (see I’m integrating vacation with learning). And really, it’s a week at the beach before my OB/GYN schedule starts. Supposedly it’s 9-5 with one call day per week (a 24hr shift) — this information comes from an older student on this post — if you want to look up my other rotations, feel free. Not as much complaining on that message board as you might think (it’s run by the MCG 2007 class).

Things you should do today:
follow the USA/Ghana world cup match (USA has to win or they’re out)
Simultaneously follow the czech/italy match (italy has to win, or czech has to win by a ton and we have to beat ghana by a ton).
Skip out on work and go to Dantanna’s/Taco Mac/the Pointe to watch the aforementioned games
call me and ask me a question from any disease on this website http://www.emedicine.com (not really, but if you want to do that feel free — i’ll tell you everything I know about it)
if you’re Jonny, go to a 10pm belated birthday dinner with your parents
order some free pamphlets from the Federal Reserve about economics (from here) and then share them with me

this is Dr. Ganapathy and he’s on my mind today while I’m studying (brilliant biochem and physiology professor, he could probably teach the whole first 2 years’ curriculum)

“Jonny, it’s your birthday”

June 20, 2006

Mad Shoutz to Jonny Cochran on your 24th birthday, you’re now as old as Andrea. I’ll join the “almost 25″ club in a little more than a month.
So here I am, in the library for the home stretch of studying. Test is Friday, I’m doing some “overview” review — case studies, reviewing biochem pathways, generally trying to refresh my brain and stay focused (but not burn out). I also have to go 1. to Dekalb medical center for a 10 panel drug screen 2. go to the Chamblee police and get a background check 3. make sure i’m cleared to start rotations before I go down to St. George this weekend. I really can’t believe that it’s time for the USMLE step 1, it’s kinda surreal. I expected to feel different, but I’m not as nervous as I thought I’d be (practice tests relieved a little bit of that).
Good luck to all the other med school people taking step 1 this month, if you’re out there reading.
time to get back to some high yield biochem notes….

in other news, I’m going with the Chutney Kid to her interview at Mt. Bethel (which seems way the F out in woodstock but it’s probably just marietta) so i’ll talk to you suckers later

i wish i could go back to sleep

June 14, 2006

but no, i have to study. I want to get 15 more points (i don’t actually know how many questions that would be) before next friday and therefore it’s time to buckle down and do it.

Here is an “I do coke” popped collar mug shot of Duke’s latest scandal (courtesy of Jonny):

THIS
is a great gift idea for a cleanliness-obsessed girlfriend, for example.

media reviews: don’t expect The Break-Up to be a Vince Vaughn/Jon Favreau Swingers-style comedy, cause it’s not. we saw it last weekend but i didn’t comment yesterday on it…KJ says that Friends With Money is a much better Jennifer Anniston movie if you’re curious.
Entourage season 2 episodes 1 and 2 were good, and i’m looking forward to the rest of the season.

yeah, i missed you too!

June 13, 2006

since we last spoke, I have done the following:

  • studied more for the boards
  • taken a practice 200-question comprehensive test and I am in good shape for next friday if I keep my nose to the proverbial grindstone
  • gotten all dressed up for an intense dodgeball match, but VBS apparently trumps the dodgeball league
tried my best to not eat 3 servings of meat per day (mostly successful!)
  • purchased Entourage season 2 for KJ but we haven’t even opened the shrinkwrap yet (you know how she is)
  • expertly assembled a down comforter-duvet cover set for KJ (yes this proves that I actually wash my sheets and duvet in augusta)
  • slacked a little with jogging every day
  • to compensate, walked to the library once and to fresh market once (round trip is almost an hour, providing a good way to listen to review audio)
  • done zero loads of laundry (something that is going to change today)
  • lost a free bet as well as a $10 NBA bet (don’t bet on the Heat, ever)
  • downloaded some Leftover Salmon for my iPod (it’s free and legal from archive.org/audio)
  • tried to find classical/smooth jazz (no words) for studying, it’s actually pretty difficult
  • received multiple emails regarding rotations (nothing too important)
  • successfully used the fax machine in our basement for one of those aforementioned emails
  • made an appointment to take the sentra to Regal Nissan for an overdue 60,000 mile checkup (cause we have extra cars at the house until Mary gets home from diabetes camp)

right now, I will:

  • do laundry
  • eat lunch (put together stuff here at the house)
  • prepare a good study plan for the 7.5 remaining study weekdays and start on it
  • shave (something I’ve had to do more often, maybe katie has something to do with that) ;-)
  • load LoS on my iPod once it finishes downloading

tonight, I will:

  • probably eat meat for dinner
  • probably watch 2 hours of House on Fox (although they’re reruns)
  • probably not watch game 3 of the NBA finals
  • possibly watch some Entourage if I get my way
  • definitely watch last night’s Lovespring International (tivo’d at KJ’s)

right now, you will:

  • leave me a blog comment
