no more Coach Janky Spanky

September 28, 2006

According to a deadspin link I read today, Clinton Portis will no longer be dressing up for post-game press conferences. No more Coach Janky Spanky (which I think I laughed at more than everybody else)….
I have been pretty good about working out this week. two visits to the wellness center plus a run through the ghetto (2 miles round trip from the mill to the corner of 8th and Telfair, then up to Greene, then back — I walked about a block of it) so that’s a decent way to get back into the swing of things in Augusta.
Downside: my back hurts like nobody’s business. I probably need new shoes, these old beat-up adidas trail running shoes have seen better days.

FOOD WARNING: may make you embarassed to know me or hungry, depending on the time of day you read this:
I’ve learned my lesson about posting recipes or meal plans, but I figured out this week that homemade tuna melts (small can tuna, some mayo, chopped pickles, mustard, pepper with swiss cheese on bread grilled in some butter in a cast iron skillet) are freaking delicious and not too bad for you. (nutrition info available upon request).
Also, frozen vegetables steamed in a rice cooker with precooked Tyson’s chicken tastes better than you’d think. I’m eating like this to counteract the free drug rep lunches (lasagna, garlic bread today) and McDonald’s that I’ve eaten a few times this week.

In sports news, UGA goes to Oxford, MS this weekend as an 18 point favorite. Hopefully they’ll rebound from the almost-loss to Colorado and blow out the Rebels. As the Ole Miss fans say: “We may not win every game, but we ain’t never lost a party.” We’ll give them a long day of partying and then a big defeat: UGA 38, Ole Miss 13 — see if I’m right on Saturday night (ESPN2, 9pm).

thomas’s business daily aka skip this entry unless you care about theoretical commodities trading

September 27, 2006

Did you know: since Shakespeare’s time, the adage has been that “an ounce of gold buys a good men’s suit.” The corollary: if you look at the price of a good men’s suit, and the price of gold is less than that, you should buy gold. Higher, short it. I don’t have the guts or available funds to short-sell anything, but gold right now is ~$600 an ounce (just so you have that figure in your head).
Here comes the debate:
how much does a “good men’s suit” cost these days?

  • Jos. A Bank sells three lines of suits, the most expensive listing for $1295 (on sale for $799) and the mid-range listing for $695 (on sale for $399).
  • Calvin Klein suits list for $1800 but can be purchased for as low as 700.
  • Armani suits are about the same price, 1000-1800.

Tell me folks, does that mean that gold is going to $1000? or is it going down to the sale price of a Jos. A Bank “Executive” suit ($199)?

I don’t expect a whole lot of feedback, but I read that historical reference and decided to run with it. FYI, the price of ETFs based on gold (GLD is a good example) is supposed to stay at 1/10 of the price of an ounce of gold. No clue how they do that, but it’s pretty close at $59.81 per share on 9/27 (compared to gold which closed at 598.60 per oz on 9/27).

In conclusion, if you think 1. the old adage is true 2. a “good men’s suit” is represented by the sale price of the top line of Jos A Bank and 3. ETFs accurately represent the price of gold, you should probably buy GLD and sell it at $79.90.

Six from Blossom resurfaces??

September 26, 2006

I watched House on Fox, then the new show Standoff (well not exactly new, they’ve done a few episodes) came on — i could have sworn that Six from “Blossom” played a generic office character with 1-2 lines.
I don’t think it’s her (Jenna von Oy), I looked on IMDB and everything.

Anyway, House wasn’t too memorable.
This weekend was a lot of fun, Katie always makes Augusta enjoyable (we went to Bees Knees, hung out downtown for a little bit, and did some intensive cleaning of my loft). We met her parents in Madison on sunday afternoon and toured some houses/properties that the Jordans might purchase. There was a 7-acre lot with a nice house that was my vote (not that I get one…).

I started Child/Adolescent psychiatry yesterday with orientation (morning: 30 min, afternoon: about an hour) and then went for my first day today. It was really interesting, I’ll be taking care of 1-3 patients per day (rounding on them in the morning, presenting at Rounds at 9:30, participating in family sessions and other counseling) and will usually be done with clinical responsibilities by noon. We have lectures 3 times a week in the afternoon, and one day per week a student has to stay around campus until 4:30. Thursday afternoons, we have some sort of clinic responsibility.
Pretty much, it’s a lax rotation — 7:30-4:30 is the worst case scenario, and there’s quite a bit of sitting and thinking.
scruple alert
Last night, the Falcons/Saints game was terrible for the Dirty Birds (although it won me some money and put me up $3.79/3.6% on the weekend…quite a recovery from the debacle of the first part of the weekend).
Lookee here, how did I miss this Tuesday night UCF/Southern Miss college football game? Clash of the titans.

back in disgusta

September 21, 2006

nobody seems to care about the Scruples.
It takes way too long to update those guesses anyway, so I’ll just let you know that my 2nd weekend wasn’t as profitable as the first, but I still got a 60% return (112->180) and took the percentage title again, allowing me the free guess first choice.
Enough of all that, I’ll keep you posted on this weekend after it concludes with MNF between the falcons and saints…
I drove back to Augusta this morning for our 2pm meeting. All of the off-campus Pediatric students met up with the course director and department chair to discuss the off-campus sites and give feedback. Mine was very positive — I really enjoyed PEDS and the doctors I worked with in Marietta. I really liked the administrative/medical business exposure that I got while working in the office, it confirmed that I like the billing/coding/insurance aspects of medicine (and would therefore want to do that in-office rather than outsource).
Blah blah blah, I know.

when arriving in Augusta, I got back to my apartment to find a few things:
1. the frozen “Steam and Serve” vegetables that I left on the counter (unintentionally) had NOT attracted ants, roaches, or other insects
2. those aforementioned vegetables didn’t smell too good, but their scent had not left the immediate vicinity of the packaging
3. the only things to eat were frozen bread, frozen raw fish, frozen uncooked sausage, PB&J, PBR (no coincidence those are both delicious), expired Uncle Ben’s rice, regular rice, crispix, sugar, spices, dry onion soup mix….you get the picture. I’m currently eating a sandwich right now. That means: I did a good job cleaning out the apartment before leaving for ATL and I need to go shopping for good healthy food so I don’t become a regular (again) at zaxby’s on walton way.
4. I left the place pretty clean, only to dirty it up with a car load of clothes and other crap that I accumulated over the summer
5. i miss atlanta, katie, and everyone else already

The Scruple-based football score-guessing challenge

September 10, 2006

AKA “an imaginary journey through credit-based football score-guessing”

Here is the premise: each week, I update you with the number of credits currently available in the imaginary bank accounts of three imaginary individuals. I will also update you with any imaginary guesses made with aforementioned credits, and keep you posted on how we would be doing if we actually were spending money.

I will be playing the part of Player T, Cam will be Player C, and Jonny will be Player J.

Summary as of 4:15 PM on Sunday
Player T started the weekend with 53 scruples ($ = Scruples, the official currency of the credit-based football score-guessing extravaganza). He made the following guesses:

$10 Bengals/Chiefs over 49.5 points - LOSS
$10 Falcons +4.5 - WIN (+$19.09 scruples)
$15 free guess: Marvin Harrison YES touchdown on Sunday night LOSS(+15 back)
Started with 200, ended with 350, profit of 150 or 75%.
Player C
(finally, I’m getting around to the winner)
Started with $50 scruples
$10.00 Minnesota +175 WIN (+27.50)
$10.00 Parlay Chargers -3, Colts -3 WIN (+38.18)
$10.00 Virginia Tech -13 WIN (+19.09)
$10.00 Parlay UGA -3, Ohio St +2 WIN (+35.69)
$10.00 FSU +145 WIN (+24.50) — caveat, this bet was for the monday night FSU/Miami game which was the previous week I believe — we’ll still count it
$10.00 Seahawks -4 Loss
Ended with 134.96 scruples, a gain of $84.96 or 170%, crushing the competition.

So that’s the final tally. Cam wins the ARRIBES GRANDES for this past weekend. Coming soon, next weekend’s results (starting with West Virginia/Maryland tonight)
